Knowing thy audience is definitely the most important thing you can keep in mind while developing if you want to make money.

Keep in mind also, the more specific your app is to an audience, the more likely it is to be picked up as a hot item to have by that audience. If you design one that is only loosely based around what your audience wants then your audience will only be loosely interested in your app to begin with. Design your application specifically based on your audience, and your audience will be specifically interested in it.
